Presentation of the project “Village of Hope”

The objective is to create a space for refugees. The goal is to install Yezidis and Eastern Christian women with orphaned victims of the same violence.
Specifically, the action is underway to help rehabilitate 100 women freed from the hands of ISIS to whom we entrust the care of 460 orphans. The project also involves setting up vocational training that could also benefit displaced camp residents near Duhok.
This should enable women and children to rehabilitate and rebuild morally as part of a “family” type of home. Moreover, this should allow women to learn or perfect theoretical knowledge and / or practices so that they can become actors of their lives and promote progress of their communities.
In the longer term, with the support of the authorities, the objective is to demonstrate the effectiveness of this action so that the latter can firstly be an example for the implementation of similar actions and secondly create optimal conditions for return to their ancestral land, where it can contribute to the reconstruction of the social fabric and understanding with other communities in the region.
Peace, stability and democracy can only be exercised in the region than plurality.

This innovative project is clearly in support of the displaced Kurdish populations.

The needs assessment and feasibility was conducted in consultation with the associations on site and the services of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in charge of the affairs of refugees and IDPs, but also through camp visits and interviews conducted with the women involved. This helped to better define the real needs and conditions necessary for the implementation of this project.
Women during two years of waiting and inactivity in the camps, took an important place in the life of the community. International public opinion is sensitized and defend their cause. Women themselves have shown courage and denounced the barbary, which is particularly difficult in their culture and in a patriarchal society folded on itself.

A partnership agreement was signed between the AFAM and the Ministry of Social Affairs of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to create a “Village of Hope” to accommodate 100 women and four hundred and sixty orphans, and the Directorate General Business
Yezidis in the Regional Government allocated 5,000 m2 of land in this action. The Ministry of Social Affairs and Worship and the Ministry of Martyrs undertake to provide the necessary support to facilitate the realization of our project.
Potentially beneficiaries’ women were consulted in order to choose the training and workshop of creation. Individual assessments and training plans are being developed with the help of partner associations.

The theoretical part of the training will begin as part of APP workshops. This part might be implemented by the Association DemDem established in Iraqi Kurdistan in Erbil and Duhok. Psychological counseling and intercommunity with creation of exchange between different groups is also provided.

Regarding the construction of the Village of Hope, the ground plane is defined, the detailed plan of the living place and the technical plans are finished.
Negotiations are underway with the Oeuvre d’Orient and the company LOGELIS, specialist in prefabricated new systems, that did a study and we will make a proposal.

LOGELIS is the company chosen by the Oeuvre d’Orient, which finances the camp Behreke: construction of 1000 housing to install the Eastern Christians. These units will be fabricated with composite panels (cement-wood walls, polyurethane injected under shaper) waterproof, insulating and transportable. The unit of production of panels, funded by the work of the East is being installed in Erbil. A church has been built and the first tranche of housing (St. Irenaeus) provides 69 apartments. Representatives of FamZG and Oeuvre d’Orient have planned a partnership agreement.

At this stage it is difficult to establish a timetable and a specific budget, but here’s one possible approach:
* Start of the activity “adult education” with a minimum budget, site organization, as resources permit, construction of a hard training center. This center would consist of customized educational workshops (APP) and will be organized in collaboration with partner agencies and sometimes in their premises. These trainings are planned independently of the construction of homes.
* A kitchen canteen / restaurant is also planned and could be coupled with training
* Depending on the state of the environment provided by the authorities in the master plan, the center could also house a temporary nursery to allow women to focus on their training.
* When resources will be provided, progressive housing construction.
* The construction of other structures is also possible depending on the needs identified on the spot, such as a school and / or clinic, even temporarily.

The action aims also included in the term by organizing support for the creation of economic activities in line with the training received.
