In the heart of Shariya Camp in Iraqi Kurdistan, displacement disrupted lives, but it could not extinguish ambition.

To bridge the gap between temporary aid and long-term dignity, LAFAM launched a holistic vocational sewing program designed to restore autonomy and open pathways for sustainable reinsertion into society outside the camp walls.

Through the power of lifelong learning and economic empowerment, this initiative transformed raw talent into real-world opportunity:

  • Professional Infrastructure: LAFAM equipped the workshop with professional sewing machines, establishing a space for skill development.

  • Community-Led Mentorship: A qualified trainer—herself a resident of the camp—was recruited to lead the course, fostering peer-to-peer resilience and localized expertise.

  • Mastery & Creative Expression: Participants progressed from foundational technique to designing and tailoring complete clothing collections.

  • The Runway to Autonomy: The program culminated in a community fashion show where the artisans stepped onto the catwalk to showcase their own creations, celebrating their talent and reclaiming their narratives.

  • Economic Agency: Following the show, the garments were sold, directly demonstrating the commercial value of their skills and proving that vocational learning is a powerful catalyst for sustainable peace.

By equipping displaced women with market-relevant skills, LAFAM continues to support vulnerable communities in taking back control of their destinies, proving that true peace begins with self-reliance.
