Game Plan for Peace: Building Lifelong Values Through Sport Education. LAFAM pilot project

In environments shaped by displacement and social exclusion, sport offers far more than a recreational outlet—it provides structure, restores dignity, and serves as a powerful vehicle for education, inclusion, and social cohesion. To foster values of respect, teamwork, and tolerance, LAFAM launched an integrated sports learning initiative in Shariya Camp in Iraq. Serving as an initial pilot, this program demonstrates how structured athletic activities can build capacity and support the integration of vulnerable populations, minorities, and displaced young adults into broader society.

What began as a localized action now stands as a practical blueprint for community engagement, empowerment, and social inclusion:

  • Community-Led Infrastructure & Leadership: LAFAM established a dedicated athletic facility inside the camp and recruited a qualified football coach—himself living in Shariya Camp—ensuring local ownership, mentorship, and operational continuity.

  • Structured Athletic Education: Regular training sessions were organized to teach fundamental sports skills while embedding core values of fair play, respect, and mutual support into every practice.

  • The Peace Education Football Cup: Demonstrating the unifying power of organized sport, LAFAM and its partners organized a camp-wide tournament uniting 32 teams, offering a healthy competitive outlet, bridging social divides, and strengthening community bonds.

  • Inclusive Opportunities for Women & Minorities: Recognizing the importance of equal access to youth development, LAFAM introduced volleyball training specifically for young women and girls, fostering confidence, teamwork, and physical well-being in a supportive environment.

A Replicable Blueprint for Social Integration

The Shariya Camp pilot proved that sports-based educational frameworks can effectively engage vulnerable youth, support women and minorities, and create meaningful bridges for social integration. By combining athletic training with values-based learning, LAFAM has created a tested blueprint that can be adapted and replicated in other regions to help displaced and marginalized communities gain the skills, confidence, and agency needed to fully integrate into society.
